INFO ON ME

Background :
There are thought to be up to 11,600 ME sufferers in Wales, although this could be an underestimate. They include people of all types, both sexes and all ages. They experience a wide range of symptoms in varying degrees of severity from being a minor inconvenience to being unable to get out of bed. Some recover to live a full and "normal" life after a few years. Many improve and regain some of their previous lifestyle, though they may continue to struggle with relapses and remissions. There is no cure, and a lot of uncertainty and disagreement over the nature of the illness and the best treatment. Many sufferers have experienced disbelief and derision from families, friends, employers, educators and doctors. There is even disagreement over what to call the illness (ME, CFS, ME/CFS, CFIDS etc)
.

Symptoms :
The major symptoms include severe, debilitating and disabling exhaustion; cognitive problems (memory, concentration etc); and muscle pain. The major characteristic of the illness however is that symptoms become worse after physical and mental exertion, although the reaction can be delayed a day or more. The other significant characteristic is the fluctuating nature of symptoms. Relapses and remissions can occur at any time.

Treatment :
An early diagnosis and plenty of rest in the early stages, and during relapses, can help to limit the effects of the illness. Every person is different and it is important to learn what helps you to manage your symptoms.
